چکیده

Fluoride levels were determined in roots, stalks, and leaves of common underwater reeds (Phragmites australis) harvested in 2001 from a polluted reservoir near Luboń and an unpolluted reservoir near Radzewice, Poland. The mean fluoride concentrations in the roots, stalks and leaves of the polluted reservoir were, respectively, 213, 36.8, 51.1 mg F/kg dry mass. In the unpolluted reservoir they were 5.4, 7.4, and 15.35 mg F/kg dry mass.

Accumulation and distribution of metals in Phragmites australis (common reed) and Scirpus maritimus (alkali bulrush) in contaminated soils of Lia industrial area

The concentration of three metals, zinc, copper and chromium in roots, rhizomes, stems and leaves of Phragmites australis (common reed) and Scirpus maritimus, and in the corresponding sediment and water samples from Lia industrial area (Qazvin, Iran) were investigated to determine difference in distribution among plant organs. Data were collected at during 1-year period. Results showed that met...

Reed bed characteristics and significance of reeds in landscape ecology

Reedswamps meet three important functions in landscape ecology: They act as a structural element and as a food-plant for a highly specialized fauna (species protection), the rhizomes stabilize the sediment and the stalks dissipate the wave energy (shore protection), and they improve the conditions for an enhanced microbial decomposition of an external organic load and an elimination or fIXation...

Resistance strategies of Phragmites australis (common reed) to Pb pollution in flood and drought conditions

Resistance strategies of clonal organs, and parent and offspring shoots of Phragmites australis (common reed) to heavy metal pollution in soils are not well known. To clarify the tolerance or resistance strategies in reeds, we conducted a pot experiment with five levels of Pb concentration (0∼4,500 mg kg-1) in flood and drought conditions. Lead toxicity had no inhibitory effect on the number of...

Common Reed (Phragmites australis) as a Bio Refining and Monitoring Plant of Pollution Resulting from Heavy Metals (Case Study: Dez River, Dezful, Iran)

One of the most important methods to investigate heavy metals as pollutants is more likely to use bio-monitors which can be applied as an appropriate index to express the quality of environment. In current study, in order to investigate the effects of dominant plants in the desired region and role of aquatic macrophytes in monitoring such elements as zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), copper (Cu) and cadmiu...

Ecosystem services of Phragmites in North America with emphasis on habitat functions

Phragmites australis (common reed) is widespread in North America, with native and non-native haplotypes. Many ecologists and wetland managers have considered P. australis a weed with little value to the native biota or human society. I document important ecosystem services of Phragmites including support for many common and rare species of plants and animals. This paper is based on an extensiv...
